Exceptions In Degree Of Comparison

Some Important Rules of Degree of Comparison: - There are different ways to form comparative and superlative degree of adjectives.

We add more or Less to form comparative degree Most or least is used for the formation of superlative degree.

For example :

1)  Tina is a talented girl.

Siya is less talented than Tina.

Saumya is the least talented among all.

Faulty Comparison: - can occur when a comparative ending in (er) or superlative ending in (est) is used with words like more, leas, most, least.

For example:

1)  Sohan's resume is more clearer than Sheena's.  (Incorrect)

Sohan's resume is clearer than Sheena's.   (Correct)

Use of Comparative Degree: -

1)  When two individuals or groups are compared, Simple comparative degree is used. For example:

Sana is prettier than Sanya.

2)  When different qualities of same person are compared use should use (more + positive degree) instead of just using a comparative degree. For example:

(i)  She is wiser than fairer.  (Incorrect)

She is more wise than fair.  (Correct)

(ii)  She is shorter than fatter.   (Incorrect)

She is more short than fat. (Correct)

3)  Certain adjective of comparative degree take (to) after them and not than like senior, inferior, junior, prior, prefer, etc. For example:

(i) He is superior to me.

(ii)  I prefer tea to coffee.

Use of Superlative Degree: -

(i)  It is preceded by 'the' and followed by 'of'. For example:

He is the most intelligent man of the class.

(ii)  When superlative degree is used after an adjective/noun is possessive case we do not put (the).For example:

(1)  It was Kalidas's best play.

(2)  This is Mumbai's most peaceful area.
